XP won't shut down

Hi there,
Anyone knows what to do if I follow the ordinary sequence (Start > Turn off
the computer) to shut down the PC and the system refuses to do it? I must
press the on/off button after closing all apps, and obviously have to perform
a disk integrity checkup routine everytime I turn the machine on again.
Already ran the online tests suggested by HP, but nothing worked. Thanks!
