XP computer won't shut down

I have a computer running Win XP Pro, and it won't shut
down without the use of the power/restart buttons on the
front of the case. When I choose shut down or restart from
the Start menu, it will exit a few of my programs from the
system tray, then just stop and sit there. I can go in and
try to shut it down 50 more times and it won't ever go any
further. Any advice?? Thanks in advance.
