My computer can't read my capture device.

I have a digital camera, i am using a firewire to connect it to my computer, i have gone through device menu and it seems to be working fine, how do i import my movie, when i click on capture device, it says no capture device was detected. what do i do. Help

i typed it wrong, i am using a cord to connect the camera to the usb port,

Is it a camera or camcorder?
If a camera you'll need to use the software that came with the camera.
If a camcorder, again with usb you'll need the camcorders software, but it
will not give you as good a quality as firewire.
