Movie Maker won't capture

I have a Canon XR830 camcorder. I am using Movie Maker version 2.1.4026.0
with Windows XP, Service Pack 3.

I cannot capture video. When I start Movie Maker, it recognized the camera
and begins to capture. The counter usually stops after a few seconds. The
tape position continues longer than the capture counter, but always
eventually goes to all dashes. This happens every time, except once I was
able to capture 6 minutes before it locked up. This happened after I upgraded
Firefox to 3.5, but I can't figure out why that would have anything to do
with it.

I've tried everything recommended on various websites. I've unchecked the
one codec I have (Sonic MP4 multiplexer) in the options. This happens with
both AVI and WMV captures. I've tried capturing the entire tape and manually.
I've tried running McAfee and Spybot first. I've left the computer unplugged
for an hour. I've tried removing all my USB accessories. I've tried saving
to the C drive instead of the F drive. My device manager says the Firewire
port and Camcorder are working "properly". Today I bought a new firewire
cable, so I know that's not the problem. Nothing seems to work.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

The obvious answer is to use system restore back to prior to your firefox
installation.

How would that help? Restoring back to pre-firefox would result in the same
capture freeze issue. Movie maker did not work prior to firefox, why would a
system restore fix the problem?

Maybe because you said this??????????????

QUOTE "This happened after I
I suggest you give the pc to a repair shop.

I said "This happens every time, except once I was

What I MEANT was that it never worked, except once. The ONE time that it
worked was after I upgraded Firefox and it only worked for 6 minutes.

So if I keep upgrading Firefox, my camcorder will work with XP. Great.
