MSCONFIG is Sometimes Powerless

G

Guest

I have been using MSCONFIG for several years now to control the startup
processes of my Windows XP system. However, I have noticed that even when
you go into the selective startup mode and actively deselect a particular
startup item from starting up automatically, many times the startup item will
somehow creep back into the files that load automatically with each startup .

For example, there is a startup file associated with RealOne RealPlayer. It
seems like every time that I turn it off, about a week later it is
automatically loading again, and when I go into MSCONFIG it has been selected
(checked checkbox) again.

The same thing happens with QuickTime. Every time I deselect QuickTime it
only takes about 3-4 days for the program to start loading up automatically
again. And like with RealPlayer, when I go back into MSCONFIG it has also
been selected again.

How do you stop these road programs from starting up??? This is driving me
crazy. it's like MSCONFIG he is powerless to prevent these processes from
starting up.

Thanks for anyone’s help!

Msconfig is really for diagnostics, not a long term utility to edit start up
items.
Try going to run, type:services.msc In msc scroll to the service to
edit,double
click on it,in the new properties window, select manual or disable, then close
out.

You are using MSCONFIG incorrectly.
It is intended for troubleshooting.
This is nothing new that programs will recreate the start-up entry, often
because of something a user does.
If you want a program permanently disabled from starting, you should go to
the program and stop it at the source.

msconfig is intended to be used as a troubleshooting tool not a startup
manager.

From StartMan Help:
[[The correct method for removing any startup is to use the program that
placed it there in the first place. The reason for this is that the program
would otherwise be unaware of the changes you'd made with StartMan or any
other startup managers, and some will actually restore their startups
automatically, thus creating duplicates. Therefore always check the main
program's own options or preferences, or the system tray icon's options (if
the program has one) before resorting to any startup manager - including
this one. Startup managers should ONLY be used to disable startups
temporarily - such as when troubleshooting - or to remove non-essential
startups that have no removal options whatsoever. ]]

StartMan is a GOOD Utility, I use it all the time, especially after
installing software. Everything you install wants to run at startup.
StartMan shows where something starts from. Check out the Help in StartMan
also! You can either have StartMan disable startups or just use it to find
where something is loading from.

Startup Control Panel is another pretty good application.

There is a setting in Real.. that automatically adds to start up, when you
start Real.
Check Real settings.
You can also edit a Real file to prevent this - google for info

How do you stop these road programs from starting up???

I use a tiny util called "DUD.EXE" which I use to replace the specific
executable causing the problem. It starts and immediately exits. Problem
solved. It can stay in my startup list as long as I have the calling
program

However:

1) Can't remember where it came from. Perhaps a wee batch-file running
CMD.EXE/c along the lines of
@echo off
exit

might do the same. Just replace your unwanted "NUISANCE.EXE" with the
renamed "DUD.BAT"

2) It must replace a called program rather than the main, presumably
useful, calling one. This might be called "UPDATE.EXE" or similar -
Check MSConfig or some other startup monitoring program like WinPatrol
(Ace proggie - Detects much more than MSConfig reports)

4. Press the button marked "Configure Message Center"
5. UNCHECK the option labeled Checking - Check for new messages

I will pursue some of the undernoted when I can find some time. Meanwhile I
have a very simple problem I don't seem competent to resolve. I moved my
ZoneAlarm exe program to another partition and it no longer goes into the
system tray at startup I have to start the program myself.
The msconfig records the program under startup with correct name and path
except that it is still showing the old partition, which is surely an
operating system fault. Is there a simple way just to change the partition
(drive lettter) please? I am far from being expert and have just moved to XP
PRO from W98.
Thanks.
