MS03-026: Security Update for Windows XP (823980)

Can anyone help me figure out why I am being bombarded
with the same auto update. When I surf to the Windows
update site or via an auto update, I am told that I need
MS03-026: Security Update for Windows XP (823980). I
check the installation log and it appears to be
successful, but in the 24 hours of my ownership of this
new Dell, I have installed this update at least 5 times.
All of the other updates work just fine...HELP

Me too - new Dell, had to install 26 criticals, this one
won't take. I've reloaded it about 8 times, from Windows
Update and the Auto update. The files are installed
(correct versions of patched files
05-Jul-2003 19:12 5.1.2600.1243 1,120,256
Ole32.dll with SP1
05-Jul-2003 19:12 5.1.2600.1230 504,320
Rpcrt4.dll with SP1
05-Jul-2003 19:12 5.1.2600.1243 202,752
Rpcss.dll with SP1), but the registry entry is empty
(HKLM\software\microsoft\updates\Windows XP\SP2\KB823980
\Filelist has only the default entry) and the hotfix
doesn't show up in add/remove programs.

Good news is that the patch is in place, bad news is that
I'll get false Auto updates every day.

Just in case it helps Microsoft accept this is a problem - I've done
exactly the same things (both solutions - remove registry entry and
Cat2 folder) - with exactly the same results - Update says I need the
fix. Only difference is I don't even have a SP-1 folder in the
WindowsXP Update directory. I started directly with SP-2. The update
shows up there and after 7 installs it says its installed every time.
And everytime the Web Update location says I need the update.

Perhaps there is something about SP-2 vs SP-1 that is causing the
continual update message?
