repeated requests to download 823980

Stewart Nelson

On 7/31, I visited Windows Update site and installed
various critical updates, including one that appears
in installation history as
"Security Update for Windows XP (823980)" .
On 8/16, Automatic Updates offered to download
"MS03-026: Security Update for Windows XP (823980)" .
I thought this might be newer version, so I accepted.
There were no error messages, but it did not ask me to
reboot, so I suspect that nothing got installed.
Today, Automatic Updates again requested to download
MS03-026... I accepted but the same thing happened.
There are now two entries for that in the history.
WINDOWS folder has a folder named
$NtUninstallKB823980$ .

1. Am I protected from the vulnerability?
2. How can I stop the repeated downloads?

Thanks,

Stewart

Thanks for your response.

When I check under Add or Remove Programs, as you suggest, there is
listed a program called Windows XP Hotfix - KB823980.

Thus, it looks like the patch is installed.

So why should I keep getting popups from Microsoft saying I need this
patch? And why, when I scan for updates using Windows Update, am I
still told that I need this critical patch?

Robert Lawrence

Go to control panel - add remove programs - check if
hotfix 823980 is listed there. If not, it is not
installed. Instead of running automatic update, download
the patch onto your computer and then install it. You wil
then see the nature of the error in installation.

See my new posting of today to this group, with the subject line "Why
does Microsoft keep telling me I need MS03-026 (patch for blaster
worm) when I have already installed it?"

I continue to have this problem, and have not yet found an explanation
for it.

Robert Lawrence

I have the exact same problem. Already installed the patch
3 times. If you figure it out, please let me know.

Thanks.
