I want to have the Microsoft Update link show up in my "custom, not classic" start menu like it does in Win98. Is there a way to do this

I'm not 100% sure what you have or what you are looking at---- the presentation of Start menu, or the Favorites in IE.

But on the Start menu----- Windows Update is on the first flyout bar on menu, once you have highlighted the All programs selection.
You can then arrange to "Pin it" to start menu. Highlight Windows Update. Do a right-click. Scan & select "Pin to start menu".
