Is there a step by step web document to make XP to look like Win98?

I've set the desktop and start menu to classic mode, remoevd the dog
cartoon on "Search", added shortcuts to the desktop to common files, but
what else can I do. I want to make this look and act like Win98 as much
as possible.

Rather than spend days looking on the web, I thought I'd ask for
suggestions.

Thanks

Move to a PC with a 10MHz clock ?

Seriously, you will need to bring the PAINT and NOTEPAD program tools from
your Win98 to your WinXP version. MS 'improved' them NOT!

Here is the method I used. Henry WA0GOZ
=====================================================================

To make WinXP look like Win98, do the *five* things listed below. All
folders will have the files listed as Win98 did.

Then if there are any folders where you would like to see the icons
instead of the listings, in that folder, go to "view" and then click
on icons instead of details.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

1: Right click on lower task bar. Select "Properties". Select Start
Menu. Select Classic Start Menu. OK yourself out.

2. In Control Panel, select Tools/ Folder Options / General / Use
Windows Classic Folders. Select Open each folder in the same window.
OK yourself out.

3. In Control Panel, select "Display" / Appearances. Under Windows
and buttons select Windows Classic style. Under Color scheme, select
Windows Standard. OK yourself out.

4. In Windows Explorer go to Tools / Folder Options / View and click
so a dot shows before Show hidden files and folders and OK yourself
out. Make sure you also untick "Hide file extensions for known file
types" if that is an option that is ticked.

5. Go to Start/Settings/Taskbar/start menu tab/customize
and in the advanced start menu options, Uncheck
"use personialized menus". OK yourself out.

I think that those are the only things that need changing to make it
look pretty much like windows 98.

You may have to go to Windows Explorer and under View, check Details.
I'm not sure if the above does that or not it's been so long that I
did this.

=================================================================
There is a simple way to get the Start Menu to scroll
from one panel to another without clicking on the double arrows
to open the whole menu.

Right-click on the Start button and select "Properties". On the Start
Menu tab, you are using "Classic Start menu" as what you are seeing
isn't available with the XP Start menu style. Click on the Customize
button. In the bottom scroll window, scroll to the bottom and uncheck
"Use Personalized Menus".

I got the Win98 version of paint and could not see any difference with the XP version.

WinXP's version of PAINT will change your working area WITHOUT asking you
and without your permission, by simply 'assuming' you want it changed.
very irritating when it is done to a carefully selected cropping, to have
all that effort suddenly undone.

If you bring a larger than your working space picture over using prt scrn,
or alt-prt scrn, or have saved an image on the ?? and then go to place it
onto your open app of PAINT;
WinXP PAINT version assumes you want a larger work space to accomodate
that larger image and will automatically enlarge your work space to accept
the larger image, and you will have to 'recrop' to get back to your
original workspace size.
Win98 PAINT version does NOT assume you wish to change the work space size
and will ASK you BEFORE you drop it in whether to enlarge the work space
or whether to leave the work space the original size. Then, dropping the
image in by either enlarging or cropping excess.

Very irritating 'improvement' to PAINT. And, to me, rather arrogant on the
part of MS SW people. At the time of discovering that 'major flaw', no one
had a solution or a workaround, so I simply brought over the Win98 PAINT
version and solved the problem.

Regarding NOTEPAD, in WinXP vs Win98's Notepad, don't quite remember the
details, but the wraparound constantly fails to operate properly, very
irritating, too. so had to go back and bring over the Win98 version of
Notepad. Yes, there are other text editors that do everything I want, I
have them, use many of them, but sometimes Notepad is faster, and just
handy. Remember, I said run your Win98 on a PC with a 10MHz clock? I see
it everywhere. Playing chess, the image motion dramatically lags behind
the position of the cursor.

WINDOWS EXPLORER changed, too, but have no fix for that. ...as I'm looking
about in the left panel and expand a folder trying to remember where an
errant file has gone and deciding on where it should then be placed, as I
move to a different folder, WE keeps un-expanding that previous folder,
even though I had desired to have that folder left expanded. Very
irritating, because I WANT them left expanded when I'm in that type of
search and place mode. It's like having a spring loaded drawer snap shut
in your face every time you you go to a new drawer, folder! So, I have to
take concentration AWAY from my search task to 'coddle' quirks in the
Windows Explorer tool.
