Need steps to put XP on a new SATA

D

David D

A friend bought a motherboard that only has 1
IDE cable - and he is using it for the Optical Drive so therefore he
had to ditch his IDE harddrive for now and use the SATA as a master..
I am not completely computer dumb, but the motherboard manual doesn't
really help me

Can someone give me the steps to putting winXP on a brand new system
with a SATA drive as the master (put together through buying separate
part, motherboard etc)?

What boot disk do I need?
Can XP be installed using a win98 boot disk?
If I could have the step-by-step, if is isn't too much trouble, that
would greatly help.

Make sure the CD /DVD drive is set as first bootable device in BIOS
setup, boot with the XP CD in the drive and setup will run, [forget about
boot diskettes].
To enter BIOS setup press the DEL key during boot.[might also be the F2 or
another key, you will have to read the manual for this info].

First, be sure that SATA/RAID disks are enabled in the BIOS.

Then, unfortunately, the Windows Install disk does not know about
SATA disks. When you start the Windows install from the CD drive,
look for the message on the bottom that says to press F6 to install
drivers. When you see this, press F6. You must then insert a disk
with the SATA drivers on them into the floppy disk drive (it MUST be
a floppy drive -- if you don't have one, then borrow one).
Sometimes the SATA drivers are labeled as RAID drivers so don't let
that deter you. Follow the prompts and leave the floppy disk in
until instructed to remove it. The rest of the installation is
fairly normal.

Good Luck

Hi John
this is not entirely correct in my experience, XP will install happily
to a SATA HDD without third party software.

I couldn't install XP ona SATA drive, had to load drivers seperately. Quite
a pain without a floppy drive! I slipstreamed the drivers and SP2 into my
copy of XP Pro and it works fine. Without slipstreaming the drivers, it
would not install.
