Making folder box no bigger than the folder

I'm mad as hell and I can't take it anymore.

Well, at least I'd like to change this. When I display a folder in
XP, it insists on including a list of things I might do, like make a
new folder, or places I could go, like the desktop, taking up a column
more than an inch wide on the left.

How do I get rid of this, so it looks like win98? I don't need to be
spoon-fed.

On Explorer window, open menu:
Tools > Folder Options

Then on Folder Options dialog's Tasks section, select:
"Use Windows classic folders"

Then press OK.

Thanks, and thanks JJ. I used to go here a lot, but it's been years
since I have, and I forgot about it, much less how to get there.
Then on Folder Options dialog's Tasks section, select:
"Use Windows classic folders"

Then press OK.

I see you have to change every instance just to get the one instance I
really want. But that's okay.

My desktop got so full of shortcuts it was getting slow to load, so
I've moved all but a very few that I actually use pretty often to this
new folder, which is on the desktop.

(I have 14 icons in the quicklaunch bar, and I don't want to put any
more there. )
