Modem /Telephone Problems

Steve Ford

Hi, my father in law has XP. He has a problem in that whenever he turns his
PC on the telephone loses its dial tone - instead it has a continuous tone.
Removing the phone cable can get the dial tone back and inserting it does
(sometimes) allow the PC to connect to the internet.

The problem happens as soon as PC is switched on - and before windows is
loaded.

Any ideas? - pc, modem, cable, telephone??

Thanks

Steve

Hi ... Well if i understood this correct i think .....
You can't be on the internet and still be able to use the
phone at the same time , its one or the other that can be
in use... This is how it is with basic internet but i
believe if you had high speed internet you should be able
to be online and still be able to use the phone ... Now
the question is , Does your father in law have basic or
high speed connection for the net ???

Sorry - didn't make myself clear. i underatnd about dial up modems hogging

the line.

He is on slow dial up - but the problem starts when pc simply switched on

( before windows loads) - ie it is not the pc trying to connect to the

internet.

You turn the pc on - line immediatley goes dead - cannot dial or connect to

internet. Only way of getting line back is to disconnect phoneline from

modem

Thanks

Hi Steve,
You did say this happens BEFORE windows even Begins to load in which case
it sounds like the modem has gone bad. You can go to the modems properties
box select the diagnostics tab and select 'query the modem' you should see
information about the modem. Either it will be, in general, telling you this
an that are ok, or you will receive an error message. you might need to
replace the modem drivers, try updated drivers or replace the modem.

It can be a bad modem driver. Are you sure you are using the correct one?
trt loading the correct one.

OR

The modem probably has a problem with the electronlic switch inside.
this has happened to me too in the past.

You should change the modem

This does happen with some internal winmodems. As I see it you have
basically two choices, get a seperate phone line for the modem and/or
get a real modem, such as an external serial modem (about $50). I'd stay
away from USB modems and PCI winmodems.
