Dial-up

-I have a Dell Dimension 2400 home edition with Intel(R)537EPV9x DF PCI modem
I have ubchecked the "Wait for dial tone" box in modem properties in device
manager. When I dial up I usually get a message: "The phone line is in use"
even though I can hear a dial tone on a telephone connected to the computer.
I close this mox and it says, "There was no dial tone" I redial. After 5
seconds the messages are repeated. Sometimes, when these messages do not
appear, it connects after about 20 seconds dialing. Then it says, "Access
denied because the name or password is not valid on the domain." Then it goes
to "The phone line is use." Is this normal modem operation?

Why would you want to possibly start dialing before a dial tone has been
established? No good can come of it.
