modem problems

Mel

Currently running AOL and swithed to peoplepc on my
laptop. Was able to logon online with both and then
started to have problems so peoplepc advised me to
uninstall aol and see if that was the problem. Now I can't
get logged at all. When I try to log on, the modem dials
and trys to connect then after about 4 trys says host
computer was unable to connnect. The troubleshooter has
not helped and neither has doing the system resore.

Any ideas on what to do next?

Thanks

AOHell changes many settings deep within the registry and breaks things.
When you try to remove it, it breaks even more. I repair computers for a
living. I refuse to even touch a computer that has AOHell installed on it.
Even their own service "professionals" are at a loss as to how to fix the
myriad of problems it causes.

My advice, and the advice of many others here - perform a clean
format/install of Windows and do NOT put AOHell on the system.

Mel, AOL makes so many changes and replaces so many system files it is
almost impossible to remove it effectively and not have problems. I
hate to say this but this may be one of the few instances were you might
be best off in a clean install of Windows XP. You'll be better off any
way getting rid of AOhell.

If you might want to go that route here is some good info on how:

peoplepc is one of the more nasty ten dollar dialups. Huge download, can
totally phark up a system. Remove peoplepc. Try the ten dollar juno,
adds a stupid taskbar in IE but is a small download and the service is
quite good.

You'll need to contact your ISP, this forun is for Windows
issues

Since MS has IE and dialers and modem drivers and dial-up networking
built in, doesn't that make _any_ IE/dialer/modem Internet issue a MS/XP
issue?

Interesting business strategy. On one hand you'd think you'd want the
business as a PC with an AOL problem will generate more billable hours.
On the other hand, folks may not want to, or can afford to, have you
come over if the problem will just take too long to fix. Or, you have
many other easier appointments and/or would rather spend your valuable
time serving your regular clients in a timely fashion.

It's pretty much the same thing if you have an old house like I do ie
primary rooms built in 1750 and big addition done in 1875.

The whole neighborhood is old, and we all have an impossible time
getting contractors to even quote a price, as _any_ thing you do is a
major project with all types of un-forseeable costs and time.

Since GM makes engines for their cars, if I pour diesel into a gasoline
engine, isn't that a GM issue?

Not at all. That's would be saying you intentially installed a virus in
XP then insisted it was an XP issue.

ps Get rid of your sig. IT is 100% false info.

No. Third party software is often untested by MS, and does things to
the computer that MS may know nothing about. Just because XP has
dialing software does NOT make this any way related to the OS. It may
well have more to do with the third party software, moving it out of
the OS domain and into the domain of the third party. IOW, this
probably doesn't belong here.

did not have the problem UNTIL HE INSTALLED HIS ISP'S SW.
