Xp and AOL compatability

Apologies if this post should not be here but the AOL groups appear to be
little used, but I was advised there might be compatability issues with XP
and AOL.

I have recently upgraded a friends PC to Win XP and re installed aol 9.0
broadband but get the following issues.

It either wont connect to the internet `cant find modem`
or, it connects and then a couple of minutes later disconnects, then wont
reconnect.
At one stage I had it connecting only from a reboot but if I signed out of
aol it would not connect if I signed back in again.

I have uninstalled aol 3 times and reinstalled.
I have phoned their help line but they cant/wont solve and just go through
`standard` tests and advise a re install.
I have switched off firewalls etc.
I had someone else check it out and they got connected but within the hour
....same problems.
Aol worked ok with previous Win millenium

Any help appreciated
thanks

Was it your choice or your friend's choice to use AOL?

remove AOL using uninstall on all progs and add remove, you'll get asked to
reboot do it then repeat manually, replace aol 9.0 using bband disc. once
done sign on/off 4or5 times to get up dates, not guaranteed but could help.
if you need me again email or add me to live messenger (e-mail address removed)

AOL Broadband with BT DSL modem has had serious connectivity issues,
recently solved with a major update - I have XP and it now works well
with AOL 9.0 Revision 4156.631.

It _used_ to stall at "Looking for DSL Modem" and eventually bomb out
with a "Couldn't find modem" message. I found that if one watched the
toolbar indicator arrows, cancelled when the "Looking for Modem"
appeared, and waited until the arrows had stopped flashing, and _then_
clicked on the Connect button, that it went through all the stages and
worked OK.

I despaired of getting its idiot support line to understand that and
just used the procedure above. Three to four weeks ago a big
connectivity update appeared which said things like "If you don't
reboot you won't be able to connect". Since that has installed, it's
worked like a charm and never coughs.

I'm afraid you'll need to contact AOL's tech support for resolution
of problems with (or caused by) their product; Microsoft has no
control over AOL's product quality (or lack thereof).

Actually this is an easy fix, if you have a wireless router, go into the
settings and change your MTU to 1400, save reboot the router and you are all
set.
