MM cannot find my capture device

I'm new here but have read and cannot find a solution. I am trying to
transfer from a JVC Digitat recorder to my PC using a firewire. When I
instruct to "Capture from a video capture device" I get an error telling me
it is not detected. I have tried many times and get the same error. I do
have the SP2 update. I have also tried using USB with same results. It just
doesn't seem to be able to find my video recorder.
