NOT CAPTURING VIDEO - rocket science?

I have a JVC DVR (mini DV cassette) - I have a brand new HP Pavillion with MM
2.1 installed. I connect fire wire to DVR to Computer. I select Capture
Video. DVR automatically rewinds and starts to play. Good! MM 2.1 says
"capturing video" - I let it do it's thing and leave it alone. Mini DV comes
to an end. Capture stops. Error message appears: "The video was not caputred
correctly. Verify that your video camera & caputre device are configured
properly." I click "O.K." Error message appears: "Capture was interrupted &
could not complete successfully." I called JVC - they said it's a problem
with my computer/software. Tried to upgrade drivers - says drivers are
current. Is it Codec (I don't know what that is?) I tried Muvee Maker by HP -
it now workie either. PLEASE RESCUE ME !

When a DV cam is connected via iLink/Firewire,
they all should meet a set criteria which includes
identifying data etc.
Usually a dialog will appear onscreen with options?
Also an icon will display in system tray?
And capture software, including WMM should identify.
All should list that it is a "JVC DV cam", clearly
identifying what is actually connected.
So try that, connect the JVC cam via firewire,
power on and set to "VCR"
Now check the icon in system tray, and also
WMM, does it identify it as a JVC DV cam,
or as something vague such as "AV device"?
If so, then it is failing to correctly recognise your
JVC DV cam.
Post back exact details.
Also, have you checked Device Manager for
any problems with your firewire card?

Thank you for replying Decoder. This is what I have for you.

1) System Tray: I have an icon identifying "mass storage device" - nothing
that says JVC DV.

2) My JVC DV has minimal functions on it, VCR was not an option. Only Play,
Off, A or M. I have it in Play position for capturing video.

3) When I turn the DV into play mode - the computer "bleeps" recognizing the
connection and kicks off Windows Movie Maker wizard (I choose defaults) - it
does not recognize device as JVC DVR but as AVC Compliant DV Device. Movie
Maker takes me through the wizard (ie: name the file, recommended settings)
The Movie Maker talks to the DVR - rewinds the tape, and starts playing it -
it says Capturing (counter is not counting, file size is frozen at 5mb and
tape is not playing in capture window)

4) Firewire card was pre-installed with computer. I checked device manager -
IEEE 1394 Bus Host controller - device working properly. I tried to update -
it returned with I have the most updated version.

ARGH - any thoughts Decoder?

Thanks for the reply - yes, firewire cable as opposed to usb cord.

I have several USB drives on my new computer, one which houses my printer
cable. There is no icon in my system tray identifying the JVC DVR
specifically. The only icon that I see pertaining to storage devices is
thefoloowing one "safely remove USB mass storage device and lists about 3 or
4 drives and the printer.

As Graham has pointed out, this usually indicates a USB device?
But as you have replied, you are confident it is a firewire connection.
and that the ID applies to other USB devices. So.....
2) My JVC DV has minimal functions on it, VCR was not an option. Only
Play,
Off, A or M. I have it in Play position for capturing video.
This is not the first post concerning JVC DV cam's that seemingly
indicate a problem when connected via firewire?.............
3) When I turn the DV into play mode - the computer "bleeps" recognizing
the
connection and kicks off Windows Movie Maker wizard (I choose defaults) -
it
does not recognize device as JVC DVR but as AVC Compliant DV Device. Movie

"AVC Compliant DV Device" clearly indicates that your JVC DV cam
is not being correctly/fully recognised and/or identified.
This could be several issues.
So we will start with the obvious ones first.
If you could post exact model details of your JVC DV cam, I will
check it out online.
Meanwhile, check your JVC manual, It maybe that in the Cams
menu's you maybe required to set the firewire port to: "DV-OUT",
You may also have to set so as that "DV-IN" is disabled?
If you post the exact model details, I will check it out. But....
I suspect it to be an issue with your PC.

The IEEE 1394 is a set and predefined standard/criteria,
and WinXP has native support for such a standard, so it could
be a soft corruption within the configuration, but this would
usually give an error message?........
Do you receive any error messages other than when your JVC
cam is connected?
As you have indicated, accessing Device Manager is not
a problem, and you have located the entries for your
Firewire card, are you confident in uninstalling the specific
PCI firewire card, this only entails RIGHT - clicking on the
entry, and selecting "Uninstall", then closing all windows,
rebooting, and XP should now reinstall the card -hopefully
correctly? (You will get the "New hardware found" wizard)
If that fails, It may now also require a physical removal and
reinsertion in the PCI socket on the MoBo, this has been known
to "cure" such ailments, but first we will check out online your
specific JVC DV cam, to see if there are known issues with
connection via firewire, so post exact model details.

Wow ! Thanks for your dedication to my process. I have a 3 year old and
desperately wanted "movie making" as a hobby/avocation ! I couldn't wait to
get started and purchased my new computer around the whole premise of
creating movies. I'm so disappointed.

JVC model: GR-D72U - www.jvc.com does have the instruction manual in .pdf
form. I didn't find anything earth stopping but 4 eyes are better than 2. I
also fished around in the JVC-DVR menu and again, pretty minimal choices.

The machine is exactly 2 years old and was purchased at Costco.

Thanks Decoder.

I notice in your original message you
said the error included:

"Capture was interrupted & could not
complete successfully."

Long shot....but I'm just wondering if
that could be due to a Screen Saver
or Power Scheme.

And...no...Power Scheme? (Turn off hard
disks after xxx minutes....System standby
after xxx minutes?)

Oh...well...it was worth a try ) Pay me no
mind...I'm just offering my thoughts.

I've also read there were issues between
MS Movie Maker and Muvee AutoProducer
but I have no verification of it.

Since Muvee AutoProducer was OEM...I
suspect if you uninstalled it you would be
unable to reinstall it. Sooo it's probably best
to leave well enough alone.

This is the google result for "JVC GR-D72U, problems"
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=JVC+GR-D72U,+problems++&btnG=Search&meta=

You appear to have a JVC DV cam that has an alarmingly common problem?
(I've also noted in recent posts of JVC dv cams, they are *not*
hot-pluggable?)

If you browse, it seems many have found a solution by changing the
Firewire card from a VIA chipset model to a Texas Instruments card?
So first, check what make of card is installed on your HP pc:
www.pcidatabase.com
In Device Manager/properties of your firewire controller located via
"IEEE 1394 Bus Host Controllers" category. GoTo Details tab,
Check: Device Instances Id
The first 4 digits are the manufacturer, (as per above website):
1022 = AMD or SmartLink
10DE = NVidia
104C = Texas Instrument
1106 = VIA
9005 = Adaptec
Post back what you find?

But before you do anything, we are going to try JVC's dubious
support link: http://www.jvc.com/support/index.jsp

This is from their totally inadequate FAQ link, scroll down to:
"Can I transfer Moving Video from my camera to my PC?"
http://www.jvc.com/support/support.jsp?pageID=1&item=19#5930
This an opt-out clause for exactly the sort of problem you are having!
I've emailed, we will see what the response is?

This is the HP support site, type exact details of your HP pc in the Product
dialog, and see what results it may produce with DV cams compatibilty
issues?

Here are some more links, but don't do anything until we hear back?

There are threads that seem to have an almost identical problem to yours,
some threads seems to also indicate it to be a common HP pc and JVC dv
cam issue? (The chipset on the firewire board?)

Guess Who? O.k according to pcidatabase.com -- Agere Systems is the driver
(no name?)

I haven't had the time to dedicate to our research today but when I have a
free second I will definitely read through and research your email.

I agree with John Inzer - there's got to be some type of answer in all of
the resources you provided.

Do I need to send homemade chocolate chip cookies to the UK for all your
efforts?

Thanks again.
