I have WMP 11 installed, and I am also asked to install the 6.4 update.

Hi Pat - I run WMP 11, too - it seemed irrelevant to patch an old player,
assuming MS know what their doing apply the "patch" if it really is one!
Hello MS! - and go from there. Make a note of when you applied the
patch so you can roll it back via System Restore, if necessary.

I have installed Windows Media Player 11 on my computer. Why am I being
offered the Windows Media Player 6.4 security update?
While Windows Media Player 11 is not vulnerable, Windows 2000 Service Pack
4, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Microsoft
Windows Server 2003 or on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition will still have Windows Media
Player 6.4 installed on the system for backwards compatibility.

Microsoft Updates out today.

This always makes me nervous. Today I embarked on the downloading and
installing of them one at a time, and all was going well, until suddenly
Defender started its daily scan in the middle of an installation. I'd
forgotten that!

To my amazement, everything still went through OK as far as I can tell.

Run Windows Update, Alan, choose, "custom" - apply what you think you
need, the information for each update is available for you to view.
Don't know, not sure? Just post back and one of us MVPs will reply.

No, Bob, you need to set-up an NNTP client for that or any MS newsgroup.

Here's the correct link for the newsgroup:
news://msnews.microsoft.com/microsoft.public.windowsupdate
instead of the link you gave above:

Sorry Randy, I think your links may be outdated, but no problem...issue with
the newsgroup has been resolved. See other reply to your message above.

Odd, Bob, I just viewed the URL, it *is* valid... sorry.
I do have a day job - *grin* - pardon if errors, if any.

Best regards for the Holiday Season from us sometimes pooped-out MVPs.

Indeed, Bob - some weeks feel like all Mondays.
My error on the NG URL - apologies!
I snip and paste from a "canned replies" file I use, which I will fix right away.

I do all that already, Randy - and I always check to see what people have
said here before I install them. But still my heart is in my mouth until
they're all done, and my computer is still in one piece!

Hi Randy,

I'm running XP SP2 all but the current updates.

I've set for auto-updates since I've been unable to manually download and
install the updates successfully.

Any ideas on how to do it manually. What info do you need?

Regards,

Bob, when you point to 'information' pages, please make sure there is
information on these - most pages on this forum pages are useless
'middlemen' pages - pointing elsewhere. Where is the real information?

That's a bit vague. What information would you like to see?
