Robin,

I believe all versions of windows still have the earlier version of Windows
Media Player. mplayer2.exe

"I have installed Windows Media Player 11 on my computer. Why am I being
offered the Windows Media Player 6.4 security update?
While Windows Media Player 11 is not vulnerable, Windows 2000 Service Pack
4, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Microsoft
Windows Server 2003 or on Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 and
Microsoft Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition will still have Windows Media
Player 6.4 installed on the system for backwards compatibility"

?:)

Robin - I saw this update available on Windows Update as well.
My best guess is that if you are running a Windows Media Player
"higher" in build that the specified build - *do not* apply the update,
as it likely not necessary.

Hope this helps you!

Ok, in plain English...

Windows Media Player version 7.0 (and above) for Windows leave version 6.4
on the system as a separate application, which can be accessed via the
mplayer2.exe executable in the player installation directory or by using the
run command in the Start Menu. Version 6.4 is not included in Windows Vista
nor in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

Randy,

I would, with great respect, beg to differ.
If the vunerable version is left on the system and gets used at a later date
this could be a problem. I have Windows Media Player 9 on my system, but have
on occasion run the mplayer2.exe has a "quicky", e.g. play an mpeg on windows
startup without having to run the full WMP9. If I leave this vulnerable
program on my machine, because I don't think I will ever use it, and a year
later find a reason to use it, forgetting it has not been patched, I could be
in for trouble.

Respectfully,
?:)

I disagree with you on this one. If someone has version 6.4 on the machine
it's certainly wise to update this. When one incidentally uses this old
mplayer2.exe and it still has vulnerabilities, one might regret it
afterwards. I sometimes use this version ( 6.4 ) for a quick glance,
normally I use version 11 (indeed with a different look).

I am running WMP11 on two pc's - and I installed all four updates today with
no problems - they were indicated to be critical updates, so I plodded ahead
and installed all, with no negative results - sometimes, I think it is best
not to question their reason for including an update - lol. I tend to
over-analyze things and it sometimes causes me more trouble as just
proceeding with the "program".

If WindowsUpdate is offering that update, I would apply it. This is a
security update--I doubt that they've been sloppy about defining the
machines that need it.

i installed the 6.4 patch then once opening wmp on one computer it told me
there was a major update so i grinned and bared it and took the plunge.
It took a while to install but WOW what a change to WMP. It looks pretty
neat and i am playing around with it to see how it goes.
