Microsoft to force Windows updates?

The impact of recent virus attacks on XP and Win 2K users then would confirm
that a huge number of PC users are relatively uninformed...or, perhaps, they
don't trust Microsoft patches after suffering through XP SP1 or Win 2K SP4.
Either way, the time they need to spend to stay on top of these issues on
Windows is time that Mac users spend enjoying their systems without that
worry..and regardless of the reasons...right???

The patch only protects misconfigured computers. If a networkor standalonne computer is correctly configured it was immune from Blaster and stupidity caused the others. NetBIOS shouldn't be exposed to the internet..

the bottom line: macintosh's cost more than intel/amd based machines.
mac virus's are less painful than m$ viruses. a hacked unix/linux box is
more severe. (simply put)

This is a NetBIOS thing. Because NT based systems are corporate computers they default to Networking for any connection, as they will be used in a company LAN. If using it for purpoes lika home computer requires it to be reconfigured.

So the blaster only affects computers set up for networking. XP, as a corporate OS, defaults to networking for all connections. One needs to disable NETBIOS over the internet connection.

Most firewalls also block NetBIOS by default. But this in not necessararly enough.

The only place where the patch would be required is computers connected to corporate networks. While the network should protect the computers from attacks, if one computer gets infected it will infect all others without a patch.

However it should be a non issue on a standalone computer that has been coorrectly manually configured.

9x computers default to being correctly configured for Interneting.

By disabling NETBIOS over TCP/IP.

Without any help from a virus or firewall
How can you configure your computer not to get the blaster virus?

My advice is as-is. It could trash your system.

The cost differential between Windows and Mac OSsystems
has dropped considerably over the years. The long term
cost of owning a Mac is still considerably less costly
than Windows PCs.

Yes and MAC has made their new OS X incompatible with most Apple hardware
out there. I have a Powerbook G3 which sits in a closet and cannot be
upgraded. They recently lost a lawsuit and had to refund money to those who
bought OS X and found their hardware would not support it.

At least XP supports MOST older hardware.

So what exactly is the "value" in writing a worm or virus that
hurts Windows users? Does the author win some sort of prize or
something?

I would guess it's the same sort of kick that any vandal gets from his
handiwork, especially if it makes the headlines, and he don't even have to
leave his house to do it.

If Gates hadn't decided that security is unprofitable, they'd just find
some other target.

No, unlike you I give only the facts.

This is actualy quite funny that anyone would post such nosense. MAC
computers are much much more expensive than PC's and that Total Cost of
Ownership myth is a joke. MAC's cost more money, have less software, and
cant even come close in performance for the same dollars spent. Recent MAC
computers like the new Dual G4's have been humiliated in benchmark testing
of the same software by single chip P4's not to mention AMD processors...
None of this means MAC's cant satisfy some users, anyone looking for over
priced, limited use computers need look no further....

Yes, it's a fact that SCO claims many things. Soon they'll be claiming
that the Penguin was on the effin' Grassy Knoll! Only you would claim
that unproven acusations are facts! ROFL!

And I'm the troll that is hiding from the truth! LOL! You should take
a real good long look in the mirror, boy.

Here's a fact for you:

My Great Aunt *claims* to have recently seen Elvis in a strip mall in

So you don't understand what a fact is.

Other people's claims are not facts. Try again when you grow up,

No, that would have been your mother! At least she is attached to a
human ass, unlike you, that is permanently attached to MicroAss!

Well, maybe. According to the NY Times: "In July, Roelof Temmingh,
technical director at SensePost Information Security, presented a
paper at a security conference describing an experiment in which a
test virus was sent anonymously via e-mail to 13 members of a bank's
computer security team. Five recipients ran the infected attachment.
"Five members of an IT security team in the financial sector executed

Who said that everyone in IT is "an informed user" & has "common sense?"

Hell, I'm a sucker for the Nigerian scam. Every time I know what it is
before I open it, but I open it up anyway because I just cannot stop
myself from reading the new twists they come up with in their formal
broken English. Somebody adds a new virus onto one of those and even
I'd get it. LOL!

8 Days and counting, and I still can not get my computer to send or receive
emails .

If you don't like MS that is your choice I don't really care! No more than
I
care what your sexual preference may be.

To think I wasted the best years of my life for apathy! All this time,
I thought you shared my feelings. I'll find myself someone who cares.
See if you can get love from that damned computer!
