It's a depressing irony, but the creep who wrote the Blaster worm may
very well have done Microsoft a tremendous favor. After all, what
better argument could the folks in Redmond have been handed to do what
they've always wanted to do - namely, force users to accept automatic
Windows updates.

Earlier this week, the Washington Post quoted Mike Nash, Microsoft
corporate vice president, as saying the company is "looking very
seriously" at requiring at least home users to have their operating
system automatically updated when Microsoft sends out a fix. Another
Microsoft security official was quoted as saying that having home and
small business users automatically receive and install software fixes
"would help the safety of a lot more customers."

Greg --

I don't think Microsoft will "force" having Windows Update
automatically download updates. I believe they are considering
making the default setting for Windows Update to be "automatic".
However, a user will still have the option to turn-off "automatic
updating" if he wishes to do so.

Right-click on My Computer and select:

Properties > Automatic Updates

The article I read stated that this was being considered
as part of the NEXT release of Windows.

That is the only way that it would be possible,
if you think about it.

To retrofit an existing release, you would have to
voluntarily download a patch, which would
eliminate the "force" issue.

Microsoft wouldn't spend the time developing
such a patch for Win 98, due to the imminent
demise of support for that OS.

I won't comment with respect to ME,
which I own but haven't used much,
or XP, which I know little about.

I think this may be the rumor mill coming back to a point that arose in
licenses for companies last year - the idea of taking software on an
annual subscription, rather than license purchase, the sub to include
all upgrades and updates. In that circumstance a requirement to take
all updates automatically might be sensible. The whole concept met with
opposition and AFAIK was put on ice

But it was not suggested for 'consumer' (ie retail) purchases, and the
effort of doing automatic update forcibly would I think rule it out for
those.

I believe the current default is actually "Keep my computer up to date..." ON,
with the option "Notify before downloading, Notify before installing..."
checked. But that may vary from edition to edition.

Haven't been following this, but I suspect the plan is to make the default
setting "Download and install automatically."--Which I would not want--I have
"Download automatically and notify when ready to install", since I do not want
Updates installing while I'm in the middle of a bunch of other things and before
I can turn off certain items (I don't use Norton protections, but that would be
an excellent example of something that needs turning off before installing
Updates.) In many cases, rebooting the machine after installing Updates is also
required, and I wouldn't want to delay that too much once the update was
installed.
