Slow updates via Microsoft Update vs Windows Update?

XP SP3 IE8

Any recent experience that would say the extended search, download and
install some users experienced with the Microsoft Update site has been
resolved?

Did the recent update of XP via the Windows Update site - no problemo,
but would like to get the Office updates as well, which (as I
understand it) are only available from the Microsoft Update site.
That site tied my system in knots during last month's update Tuesday.

Hoping someone could provide some current info regarding MS' progress
on that problem (for some) resolution.

Thanks

On the XP systems I've seen so far the issue with Microsoft Update has
been resolved. The first scan done by MU will still take longer then
subsequent scans but the extremely slow or non-responsive issue should
be gone. Key word being "should".

Thanks Mow, I will give it a try. If I don't get back to your for
awhile, well......you know....Update probably has my system by the
neck.

It worked, not snappy, but then, not an hour either, and there doesn't
seem to be any residual wuauclt.exe activity, like before. MS seems
to have fixed the problem. Any word on what that problem was?

The only thing I've heard is that there was an issue with one update.
The offending update was removed, reworked, and the MU issue is supposed
to be gone after the initial scan takes place.

Since MU offers updates for all MS software instead of just for Windows,
as WU does, one can make an educated guess to try to determine which
update was the cause of the issue. My half-educated guess would be a
Silverlight update or updates.
