Automatic Updates Not Working

A

Ape

I am running XP SP3. I have windows firewall OFF and automatic
updates ON. I am used to seeing windows updates flagged and executed
when shutting down. Now for some reason, even though I see that there
are seven updates which seem to be executed during shutdown, every
time I repeat using the machine, it wants to do the same thing again.
And again. And again.

I have never seen this happen before, and in fact is not happening on
another XP machine I tested.

So, what is wrong? Has something become un-set?

Thanks

Check out your Update Settings; maybe somehow they got turned
off? I have it set to download the updates but let me decide when
to install them. The updates show as an icon in the system window
on the right side of the taskbar until I install them. That way
you take away the possibilty of the machine shutting down too
soon or whatever is happening. And you can watch them being
installed if you want to, and will see why the downloads are
failing and which ones, by using the Custom button instead of the
Express, which hides most of it from you.

If the update icon is on the shutdown link and appear to be executed at
shutdown, but are being offered again at the next start, most likely
either they are failing to install or update detection is messed up.

Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ with Internet Explorer,
install and/or update the ActiveX Control if prompted, then click the
link on the left side of the page under Options, that says "Review your
update history". Look for the updates by KB number in your history, and
see if there is a red "Failed" icon next to the updates in question. If
so, click the red icon... a small window will pop up with the Error Code
number for that failure.

Post back in a reply here, with the Error Codes for each failed update,
and which updates they are, by KB number.

You need to uninstall them and let Windows Update reinstall them from scratch.

Every time a .NET Framework update comes out this happens on a lot of systems.

Download .NET Framework Cleanup Tool.

The updates happen during shutdown, and all I see is a little window
indicating that update number whatever *and there are 7) is being
performed. After all seven are done, the machine shuts down

Go to the Windows Update web site as I told you in my reply three days
ago, and look at the update history to see what failed, and what the
error numbers are.

Not to frost your acorns again, but I have been unable to follow your
guidance, and so far have not been able to find and read my 'update
history'. I had to upgrade to explorer 8 before I could even start.
That done, I got no further.

Thanks anyway

I found the updates in Control Panel:

KB2744842
KB2618444
KB2761465
KB2799329
KB982381
KB2598845

All updates for explorer 8, and apparently won't work

Thanks

Did some closer examination of updates listed in Control Panel>add or
remover programs, and found many more updates listed as having been
done on other apps. However, none are flagged red.

So, I still do not know which 6 are failing, if they are.

I found and scanned the file 'automatic updates.log' at c:\windows for
all references to KB update. Found several.

None showed any processing error.

So still do not know where my problem is.

For what it is worth, here are the windowsypdates.log entries for the
last six updates which of course failed like always - the times seem
right.

The error number may be 0x80190194

Anyone???????

Thanks

Not to frost your acorns again, but I have been unable to follow your
guidance, and so far have not been able to find and read my 'update
history'. I had to upgrade to explorer 8 before I could even start.
That done, I got no further.

Thanks anyway

Apeman

What exactly happens when you go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
in Internet Explorer 8? You should see the link to your Update History
on the left side of the page. What are you seeing? You are not giving
us any information.

I see the Automatic Options 'options', of which I had chosen and still
have 'download updates for me, but let me know when to install the
updates'. It has been that way for days now.

What info are you looking for?

I am running XP SP3. I have windows firewall OFF and automatic
updates ON. I am used to seeing windows updates flagged and executed
when shutting down. Now for some reason, even though I see that there
are seven updates which seem to be executed during shutdown, every
time I repeat using the machine, it wants to do the same thing again.
And again. And again.
I have never seen this happen before, and in fact is not happening on
another XP machine I tested.
So, what is wrong? Has something become un-set?

See if this is helpful.

Went through the sequence of uninstall's suggested. Left with two
updates for 3.5 which I cannot remove. KB863707 and KB960043.

That said, I now seemingly do not have NET FRAMEWORK of any version
installed. But the repetitive wants to install the prior stated six
updates over and over seemingly are gone. Thank God for little
favors.

Of course, now I wonder how the fact that net framework is now missing
entirely will affect me.

Thanks
