Automatic Updates Not Working

G

glee

I see the Automatic Options 'options', of which I had chosen and still
have 'download updates for me, but let me know when to install the
updates'. It has been that way for days now.

What info are you looking for?

Are you even looking at the actual Windows Update website that I linked
to? Your description sounds like you are just looking at the Automatic
Updates applet in Control Panel in XP, which is NOT the Windows Update
web site. I described (twice) that you go to the web site, and look in
the left-side column for the update history link.

Yes

I see no red flags.
Now anyway

I went back to 1/3 and find three red flags for:

KB2729450 (1/10)
KB928365 (1/18)
KB928365 (1/18)

Went through the sequence of uninstall's suggested. Left with two

updates for 3.5 which I cannot remove. KB863707 and KB960043.

That said, I now seemingly do not have NET FRAMEWORK of any version

installed. But the repetitive wants to install the prior stated six

updates over and over seemingly are gone. Thank God for little

favors.

Of course, now I wonder how the fact that net framework is now missing

entirely will affect me.

Thanks

Windows XP Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0

(KB928365) Friday, January 18, 2013 Microsoft Update

Apeman,

Try out Revo Uninstaller, it can uninstall most anything, even those programs which were poorly written and leave behind files, registry entries, etc.

In regards to a post where someone was giving you a hard time.

They may be burdened with some chips on their shoulders. :)

I am getting two repetitive update demands at every shutdown now.

Because I have done several shutdowns and reboots, I now have in
Control Panel>Add-remove programs:

Framework 2.0 SP2 installed today
Framework 2.0 SP2 installed today
Framework 3.5 SP1 no installation date shown

http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us

says:

Windows XP Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0
SP2 Update for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982524)

and

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Update for
Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982524)
This update addresses a set of known issues of the Microsoft .NET
Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1. After you install this item, you may
have to restart your computer.
How to Uninstall
This software update can be removed via Add or Remove Programs in
Control Panel.

I have tried AGAIN to remove the two 3.5's (KB960043 AND KB963707) in
control panel>remove programs. and they fail.

And of course shut down wants to do another two installs.

I hope this clarifies correctly my situation, and that you can suggest
the next step before I try a bunch of Framework removals again.

Thanks

I am running XP SP3. I have windows firewall OFF and automatic

updates ON. I am used to seeing windows updates flagged and executed

when shutting down. Now for some reason, even though I see that there

are seven updates which seem to be executed during shutdown, every

time I repeat using the machine, it wants to do the same thing again.

And again. And again.

I have never seen this happen before, and in fact is not happening on

another XP machine I tested.

So, what is wrong? Has something become un-set?

Thanks

Have you tried Revo Uninstaller ?

It can delete even those poorly written programs that leave behind files, registry entries, etc.

You STILL have not followed the directions I gave you. At
update.microsoft.com web site, click the link on the left for your
UPDATE HISTORY. Does it show any FAILED updates in the recent round of
updates? If so, click the link where it says Failed and tell us the
error code number. If no updates show that they failed in the update
history, please tell us that.

If the .NET Framework updates show that they are installing correctly in
the Update History at the link I already explained to you, yet they keep
being offered again after a "successful" installation, stop the
Automatic Update service in Windows, via Start> Run> services.msc, then
delete the contents of the \Windows\Software Distribution\Download
folder on your hard drive, then restart the Automatic Updates service in
services.msc

Then go to Windows Update site and check for updates again. If you are
still offered the installed updates again, then you may need to remove
all the .NET Frameworks using Aaron Stebner's removal tool, then just
install .NET Framework 3.5 SP2 from a direct download from the Microsoft
download center. It includes .NET Framework 3.0 and the .NET 2.x
runtimes as well.

Not to frost your acorns again, but I have been unable to follow your

guidance, and so far have not been able to find and read my 'update

history'. I had to upgrade to explorer 8 before I could even start.

That done, I got no further.

Thanks anyway

Apeman

I am curious as to why you upgraded to version 8 of explorer ?

I did so because I got messages to upgrade IExplore on some sites.

I had to go back to 6.0 because 8.0 corrupted one of my .net framework installs
which I use in my programming.

I use another browser as my primary browser.

Good luck,
Andy

Every day is an adventure.

....and those are failed .NET Framework updates. Clear the Software
Distribution\Download folder as I described in my other reply to you
today, manually download the updates in question from the Microsoft
download center, and install. If the repeated re-detection still occurs
after that, I suggest you use Aaron Stebner's removal tool to strip out
..NET entirely, then install only .NET 3.5 SP2 from a manual download of
the installer.

Version 6.0 is about 1/4 the size also.

As things stand right now, I have uninstalled IE8 in via Control
Panel, and now am running with IE6 installed. There is now no .net
Framework installed, but there are three 3.5 SP1 entries that remain
in the list that I cannot uninstall or otherwise get rid of (KB960043
and KB963707).

I still get repetitive updating at shutdown and
http://www.update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
tells me over and over that one update is failing saying:
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 2.0 (KB928365)
A security issue has been identified that could allow an attacker to
compromise your Windows-based system running the Microsoft .NET
Framework and gain complete control over it.

with error code 0x66A

Earlier it had told me a second failure:
Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 6 for Windows XP
(KB2761465)
Security issues have been identified that could allow an attacker to
compromise a system that is running Microsoft Internet Explorer and
gain control over it.

with error code 0x8007F0EA

I don't see that recurring.

Thanks
