Microsoft backup

I need to install Microsoft Backup onto Windows XP in
order to restore files from my old Windows95 operating
system.

Can you tell me where to download this program?

You do not need to download it! It is on the XP install CD.

However, I am not sure that it is compatible with the "older" versions (95,
98, NT, 2000, ME).

Insert your XP CD and locate VALUEADD\MSFT\ and find NTBACKUP.MSI and
double-click on it.

Yves is right - you won't be able to restore files made with Win95 backup.
Find someone who has Win95, do a restore, burn a CD or transfer across a
network....

Your guess is correct. It is *not* compatible.

I don't think the OP will find that the XP backup program will recognise
backups from Windows 95.

While NTBackup does not recognize the MSBackup .QIC files, try the utility

Ntbackup will not recognize the file compression used by Win98's msbackup.
Download the 30 day trial of Backup MyPC from www.stompinc.com will work.
Backup MyPC is actually the Veritas Backup Exec app that the Windows Backup
programs are based on so it will open and restore .QIC files.
