My messed up XP boot process (Semi-SOLVED)

Thank you one and all for suggestions and help. I finally put a one
year old Acronis backup onto a fresh, identical hard drive. I am in
the process of transfering files from the failed disc. This will take
awhile but I re-learned a lesson. (My wife's attitude, of late, drove
the point home). I will make more backups and do it more often! When I
am done with this I will try some of the other suggestions and see if
I can make the damaged Windows XP reappear. I will try making a BartPE
cd. I have a Hirems, UBCD and the original XP installation disc.I can
look for a way to access Restore points with that. But I'm afraid I
really didn't know what to do with them. Thanks again soooooo much!!

Rather than (I'm sure some here will say "as well as") general backups,
I'd recommend you make some specific ones: a CD of your photographs, for
example. (Ideally make two or three. At the slowest speed your drive
will go at.)

Most important aspect of that is to stop using it (the disc).
