I keep receiving messgae on desktop[ that microphone is
on. I believe that this is the headphone mic but can't
find out how to turn it off. Can anybody help please?

Find the little loudspeaker icon in the system tray (next to the clock).
Double-click the icon which will open up the Volume Control panel. Under Mic
Volume, make sure the Mute check box is checked. Exit and that should fix
it.
