microphone won't work after reinstall

Hi,
My computer got a virus that really messed it up, so I
did a destructive recovery and formated everything on the
user portion of the HD. I have an HP by the way. Ever
since then I can't record anything using the mike. Its
plugged it and everything and I have pretty much played
around with every single option in Volume Control.
Everything is fine in my device manager. I have an HP
with an audio chip built on the motherboard. It is a VIA
AC'97. I thought updating it would fix it so I went to
Windows Update but to no avail. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Fixed mine by eliminating the IRQ conflict. Remove all & any cards from
slots & extra drives you can. Go into Device manager & remove same from
there. Then boot & install sound related devices when requested. (Have
drivers on floppy or on HD ready)
Any better?
I found sound DEMANDED a particular IRQ & if it is allocated already, it
won't work. Strange thing ie that it LOOKS like it IS working tho!

It has its own IRQ. Thanks for trying to help. Grumble
Grumble... This is so evil because it used to work.
