Microphone won't work

Both PCs have Windows XP home edition with all the latest
Windows updates.

The built-in microphone won't work in my HP Pavillion
laptop. Neither does the mike on my headset. But the
headset mike works fine when plugged into my HP Pavillion
desktop.

The mike built into a USB WebCam works on both PCs (when
selected) but quality is poor compared to the headset mike.

I have checked all the Laptop settings several times in
Control Panel/Sounds... The Laptop has VIA audio (WAVE)
selected (VIA is the built-in sound card) The Volume
settings have Mike selected in Recording Settings and not
muted in playback setting.

hey Al, my microphone doesn't work either in messenger 6.1. i've gone through the same checks that you have; works
everywhere except in messenger... what's up with that?

i had 4.xxx before, and it worked there, but when i upgraded to 6.1...well it went to hell in a hen basket
....it doesn't work!

any luck in finding a solution?

Have you tried this? Open MSN Messenger > Click Tools on the main menu >
Click Audio/Video Tuning Wizard.
