Microphone input not working

I'm so frustrated right now, I own a laptop and yesterday I bough a headset
with microphone included since the fan on my laptop makes a lot of noise and
the people I talk to are bothered by the loud fan, I thought this was going
to solve the problem, but yesterday when I plugged the headset the other
person told me he can still hear the fan, how can I block the sounds coming
from inside the laptop and just leave the external microphone working? I have
tried everything but nothing worked, I have no idea why my computer won't
give me an option to pick between external microphone or internal, please
help!!

thank you Reggie but that's no it, it's not noise that the microphone is
picking up from it's surroundings, the noise that they are hearing is the
fan, same as before when I was using the built in one, it's an internal noise
not external, and it is a microphone with noise reduction built in.

So are you saying the other party is NOT complaining about the "whoosh"
fan noise cause by air movement and the turbulence (which causes noise)
and instead it is some electrical "whine" or "buzz" that they hear in
the call? Air physically moving around a wire, like for your headset,
is not going to induce noise into that wire. Your headset is not at the
source of the air noise but farther away so any pickup for the air noise
would be reduced or eliminated. So the "noise" of which you complain is
not from the air turbulence by a fan. That noise must be electrical
interference.

If it is an electrical noise they hear, how do you know it is caused by
the fan? Does the whine or buzz variate when the fan's speed changes?

Do YOU hear this noise?

Just how are the other parties getting connected to this call? Over
VOIP through your network? A voice modem connected to the phone line?
You've told us how you are connected to the call but not how they are
connected to the call.

Assure that the mic cord from the headset is plugged in as well as the
hearing cable. If they are both plugged in and you have the same problem...

1. Open Volume Control

2. On the "Play Control" applet, mute the microphone. If the mic isn't
listed, click "Options", "Properties", tic Playback", tic "Microphone" in
the list of devices, click "OK" then mute it.

3. Click "Options", "Properties", tic "Recording", assure "Microphone" is
ticked, "OK", tic "Select" under microphone on the Recording applet.

Double click on the speaker icon in your system tray. Select the 'options'
menu and select 'properties' from it. Click the 'Recording' radio button
and then check that your front panel mic connector is checked on the box
underneath. Click 'OK'. You should now be able to select your required
input (they are mutually exclusive - that means you can't have two active)
and set the input level. The advanced button (if you have one) allows you
to boost the input by 20dB. I know you are not recording, but that is how
it is done.
