microphone

In "sound and audio devices properties" I have one option for voice
recording, which is "VIA AC'97 Audio (WAVE)". I removed my sound card
because it stopped working and now I have my mic plugged into the microphone
jack on the computer. However, "test hardware" on the "voice" tab does not
see my microphone. I can not use it. What happened when I removed my sound
card and how do I get my mic to work with the microphone input that came with
my computer?

Do you have an onboard sound chip, if not I'm guessing you are
connecting the mic into your internal modem.

I have an onboard sound chip. There are 3 jacks that came with the computer,
mic, speakers and aux. The speaker jack produces sound over computer
speakers or my headset. The mic is not being seen by the computer. It seems
like it is looking for the mic from one of the USB inputs, which is where my
mouse and printer are plugged in.

Double click the speaker icon in your notification area (on the right
end of the task bar, where the clock lives). That should bring the
volume control app. If there's no slider for the microphone, use
Options|Properties and put a checkmark beside "Microphone" and click
OK. Now the slider should be there. Look at that slider and make sure
the "Mute" box is not checked. Now adjust the slider high enough so
that you can here what the microphone is picking up.

If, however, Keven wants to use the microphone for VoIP, it would be a
good idea to mute it and pull the bar all the way down.

Go to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices>Audio Tab>Sound Playback(and
Sound Recording) and see if your onboard sound is listed in the dropdown
list. If it is select it and do the same on the voice tab.

The drivers are up to date.

Try Louis' suggestion:

Go to Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices>Audio Tab>Sound Playback(and
Sound Recording) and see if your onboard sound is listed in the dropdown
list. If it is select it and do the same on the voice tab.

Make sure the onboard sound is enabled in BIOS and everything is OK in
Device Manager
