Hello
I want to be able to do some recording, voice over. I have a microphone and
when I plug it into the mic port on the back of my computer and run the
"check" it doesn't work. Do regular microphones not work with the computer?
It's a musician's studio microphone.

Does your mic require phantom power?
if yes and most studio mics do, it will not work with the computer.
is your recording source set on Mic?

I am trying to use a phone pickup (Yes legally). It is plugged into the
proper plug in the computer but I can't find any way to get it to work. I
can't find anything to set to mic.

To my knowledge, I don't think it requires phantom power, it works when I
plug it into my boombox and record. Where do I find "recording source"
settings?

Try Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Audio > Sound Recording
