Try this.

Start | Run | Type: sndvol32 |Click OK |
Options | Properties | Under adjust volume for, click Recording |
Place a checkmark in Microphone | Click OK

You should now see a volume slider for Microphone.

Hope this helps. Let us know.

Hello Wes
Just being nosey and testing your directions as my microphone does not work
at all - but all I see are sliding control options for wave, sw synth, cd
player and line-in but no reference to microphone.

I'm nosey too, that's how we learn.

Did you open Options | Properties ??

In Sound Control or Record Control Properties, the Show the following volume
controls: [[Displays the devices on your system whose sound you can control.
Click to adjust the volume for each device.]]

If Microphone is not listed then you cannot control the volume for it.

Look in the Device Manager under [+] Sound, video and game controllers for
your sound card. Look at Properties and see if anything is disabled.

Also look for any black exclamation points (!) on a yellow field, red Xs or
green question marks next to your sound card. These indicate problems.

What do you have for a sound card and what is your mic plugged into?

Open System Information...
Start | Run | Type: msinfo32 | Click OK |
Click the [+] Components | Click Sound Device |
Click any where in the right hand pane | Ctrl + A to select all |
Ctrl + C to copy | Paste that info
