Microphone problems

My computer won't play any sound from the microphone, be it into the sound
card or the USB port. The microphone test in control panel gives a signal on
screen for the 'speak now and set level' test but no audio comes over the
speakers. Volume control isn't muted and up in playback and recording. I can
record and playback recorded sound but there is no live output.

Any ideas out there?

You must have the Microphone checked in the Playback option. You can find
this by typing this in the Run command

Mmsys.cpl

then click "Advance"
Under the Options menu select Properties.

Make sure the Playback option button is selected then check off the
Microphone.
