Microphone and audio problems

I am unable to input any sound via microphone. I had a creative labs sound blaster live pci sound card. Under warranty (Dell), we could not resolve this over the phone and assumed the card was bad. So they sent me a new one, and it has the same problem.

I then tried swapping to a Phillips Sound Agent 2 PCI card and had the same problem. Then I tried putting that card in a different PCI slot. When I did that, I also lost the sound to my speakers. When I go to Sound and audio devices, and select the correct device, all inputs are greyed out and I can not select anything. When I attempt to test the devices, the test fails.

I then plugged in a USB external sound box and tried that. When I go to sound and audio devices, the USB device is present and it allows me to check properties. I run the test wizard and it begins to test ok, until it gets to the point of having me test my microphone volume. Both the microphone and speaker volume are greyed out and cannot be adjusted.

If I right click the speaker in the systray and open the volume control, then select options/properties, under playback, speaker is selected and under recording microphone is selected but I cannot access the volumes.

Help?
