Microphone Setup

I cannot get microphone mike to work, in fact I have tried 3 different miles w/o success. According to XP Help, to set up the mike I must go to Speech in the Control Panel and then hit the Speech Recognition tab, speak into the microphone, and sound level should register in the Microphone Level indicator. But no such tab exists in the Sheech window.

When I click on the Voice tab in Sound & Devices in Control Panel and then run the test Sound Hardware Wizard, again, no sound level indicator appears, though I get a message that my sound hardware is working correctly.

I have checked the Master Volume panel and all volumes are set at Max and none are muted.

I would be most pleased to receive any suggestions.

In Control Panel|SOUNDS, you clicked on the VOICE tab and then on the TEST
HARDWARE button?

Also be sure that the mic is enabled, though this process will vary
depending upon the sound card...

Double-click the speaker icon in the Notification Area (taskbar,
far-right), then click OPTIONS|PROPERTIES. Click the ADJUST
VOLUME|RECORDING|OK. Checkmark in the Mic box, and see if that helps.

Are you using soundcard mikes? They're different than standard mono mikes
in that they have what looks like a stereo plug on them but the extra ring
is for a bias current instead of a second channel. Make sure your mike is
plugged into the mic input and not the line in. If you ARE using a
soundcard mike and it IS plugged into the mic input jack, it's entirely
possible your soundcard mic input is broken. Win XP would still say it's
working normally, though.

such tab exists in the Sheech window.

Do you have the optional speech recognition software installed? It comes
with Office XP and later.

Hi,

Remember there is a sound card that is a part of the mother board and so u must install the drivers for the mother board, This will be the drivers for the display adapter and sound card of the mother board. It may or may not get updated through the Device Manager. So you will have to run the setup program from the CD to install the drivers. After the computer restarts you will be able to see the microphone tab settings in control panel.

Gentlemen
Thank-you for your responses. The problem seems to have been that neither box had been checked in the Master Volume/Advanced Controls for Microphone/Other Controls. When I checked the "1 Microphone" box, everything came good. Thanks again
