microphone is always on

My microphone has switched to an "always on" condition - every sound is being
picked up by the microphone and comes right out the speaker.

I've tried disabling speech recognition, but that didn't change anything.
The only thing that works is to unplug the microphone.

I used to be able to have the mic plugged in, but it only worked when I used
webcam or went to specifically record a sound.

Any ideas on how to shut it off?

Control Panel > Sounds and Audio > Audio > Default Device
(middle button)

Good luck!

In addition to Talahassee's response, an easier way to "shut it off", is
rightclick volume icon (next to clock bottom righthand corner of screen)
and click Open Volume Control. Click Mute under the Microphone and
Close the window. Voila!

Went through the steps - got to 'audio' - there are 3 devices (sound
playback, sound recording and midi playback) - I'm not sure what to change.
I've tried changing the sound recording option, but it doesn't seem to change
anything.

I am having the opposite problems with some software - I can't get th
thing to make any sound

Judging from the post and some stuff I have seen on the web it sound
like I should be seeing a microphone option under the volume control
Well there is none and nothing to select in the properties either.
The mixer device in the properties window is listed as Sigma Te
Audio

How do I get the microphone option

How do I get the microphone option?

Should be <open volume control> <options> <properties> then check mic box
and OK
