Microphone Problems!

I can't get my computer to be able to recognize a microphone. I have a
headset with the two different plugs for headphones and microphone which is
plugged in. I installed the speech recognition thing, but the microphone
still doesn't show up on the main volume control panel on the start bar. any
suggestions? when i ran the sound device problem diagnostic test, it said
everything was working well. i don't know a whole lot about computers, so
i'm not sure if there's a simple step i am overlooking.

the audio manager is sigma tel audio, the one that came with the computer.
and the headset isn't anything too special, just like a $15 combination
thing, the brand is NGS. thanks!

In that case I feel I cannot help. But
Have you tried the Master Vol control - double click on the little speaker
icon in the task bar bottom right. This should show the Mast Vol - Click on
Options - then Props and you should then have a choice of Input and Output.
Each one chosen then gives a list of vol controls you want to show in the
Mast Vol. Make sure Mic or coloured jack are ticked and that they are not
muted in the Mast Vol.
In my case the headset goes into front pink and green as choice - they could
go in the rear also.
Sorry I cant help further than this.
Have you contacted the computer builder for help?
With my mic, and I cannot explain why, I have to wait up to 30 seconds
before it works i.e. on testing I hear my voice in my speakers.

I couldnt get my microphone to work in the front connection but could at the
back connection. I have what is called a "vinyl deck" sound system. I had
to go into that and into speaker configuration and tick "front mic select",
it works in the front connection now.
