getting microphone to work

I can't get any microphones to work. I have a new headset and can hear
sound through it but can't hear anything when I speak . The XP help and
support centre says
To test the connection:
Open Speech in Control Panel.
Select the Speech Recognition tab.
Speak directly into the microphone. The sound level should register in the
Microphone Level indicator

But when I open Speech in Control Panel there is no Speech Recognition tab,
only Text-to-Speech.

What do I do? The new headset didn't get recognised as new hardware and I
haven't found any way of installing it as such. Is this the problem, and if
so how do I resolve it?

thanks
Tony

There will be no speech recognition tab unless you have installed speech
components from Office setup or from other programs that allow speech
input.

Try this instead: Open Volume Controls. Click on Options> Properties. On
the screen that appears, move the radio dot to "Recording" and put a check
next to Microphone. Click OK. The volume controls window will now show
Microphone. Check that the volume control is not muted. NOTE: There may be
additional settings depending on your hardware and drivers but these basics
are enough to check if the mic is working.

Leave this window open and bring Sound Recorder up on the screen. Refer to
the help file if you need to and use Sound Recorder to create a test voice
recording. Use the Volume Controls window that is still on the screen to
adjust the volume of the voice input up or down.

I don't know where you're headed using the microphone but at the very least
the above steps will let you know if it's working or not.
