Microphone not working

My microphone is not working...not even in Sound Recorder.
I have done a search to set up my microphone...every place I look(whether
within XP Help or Microsoft tech support on the web) it appears that I need
speech recognition installed in order to have my microphone work even if I
NEVER INTEND to use speech recognition. Is this correct?
Can anyone assist me in setting up my microphone?

Assuming it is pluged into the correct mic input jack...

maybe you have it "muted"....

Double-click the little speaker icon at the bottom right of your
screen to see...

I have the same problem and already tried all of that. It worked on the other computer we have which also has xp.
