Hi. I'm trying to record a trumpet piece on Windows Sound Recorder using a
Sony omnidirectional mike plugged into the back of the computer where it
says 'Mic'. It's not recording. Is it the settings or is it the mike? How do
I troubleshoot this?
You might also open the sounds and audio in control panel, or the
speaker icon in the task bar and see if the mic is muted. Mine has to
be when I record from the input jack else I get feedback from the
speakers into the mic.

Black box repair is my process, but I have a few spare mics and 3 pc's.
The only way I know to do testing is to plug it into a known good item,
like someone elses pc. Or borrow another mic. Its not out of the
realm that your sound card is bad. You might want to search for a
freeware or trial version of another recorder. I'm not saying windows
recorder is bad, but its another option.
Open your mixer by double clicking the speaker icon in your system tray.
Click on options > properties and click select the recording recording radio
button and make sure that the microphone is selected in the pane below then
click OK.
Once you've done that make sure the box labebled "Select" is checked under
the microphone entry. You should also see and "Advanced" button. You "may"
need to cleck the advanced button and choose "Mic boost" if your mic is not
powerful enough to drive your sound card. Hope this helps.
