Mcafee virus scan preventing safe shut down of PC

Whenever I try to shutdown a pop up comes up to say that mcafee virus scan is
installing in the background do not shut down or restart until this has
finished for which you will recieve a notification. I have left the PC on for
ages and it does not notify me. What is happening can someobody please help
me - its driving me mad!!!!
