Taskbar is missing following VirusScan

My friend has XP Home Edition (SP1). It has McAfee but had not been updated
in months (Microsoft or McAfee) and it was loaded with viruses. After getting
McAfee updated, I ran a scan and it found and cleaned dozens of memory
viruses, trojans, and potentially un-wanted programs. It looked like it
cleaned them successfully, but then upon rebooting, the taskbar is gone. Not
hidden; Gone. I can't resize it and CTRL-ESC doesn't bring it up. The only
way I could safely shut down the PC is to bring up the Task Mgr and select
Shut-Down from there.

I contacted McAfee, but all they told me to do was uninstall and Re-install
Security Center. Since the PC is not at my house, I can't do anything yet.
But it sounds to me like some Windows system files were either corrupted
and/or deleted.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.
