problems: can't system restore, no taskbar, no internet or email, can't run programs

I ran mcafee last night on my computer. I noticed when it was cleaning
that some fonts started to change on my taskbar. It said for me to
reboot and I did. When I rebooted, there was no taskbar. I finally
got a taskbar, but only when I use it for other reasons other than to
minimize. I can't minimize anymore. The programs just close. Nothing
starts up like it used to when I booted. I went for a system restore
and it says that the system restore is unable to protect my computer
ans that I should restart. It still will not work. I have tried in
safe mode as well. I have no internet or email connection. I can't
print. I can't get mcafee to run. I can't copy files to anywhere.
I am frustrated and need important docs from my computer! Please
someone help me!!!!

I have a bootable WinPE (PreInstalled Environment) that would allow you to
access the files on your HD but you don't have to boot from the HD so you're
not affected by all the viruses that have apparently taken over your
computer. I would try to get a recovery or Ghost disk or something like that
and get off the files that way. Then after you have a confirmed backup, I
would reinstall Windows. Most viruses that have taken over to the level you
have described are way more work than they are worth.

If you don't have a bootale CD I would suggest http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/

Good luck!

This may have affected you. A bad .dat file from McAfee that wipes out dll's
and exe files that it should not.

See below:

This discussion may be of particular interest:
http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/03/13/1322215 It seems a bad
..dat file was released; it targets many harmless DLL's & EXE's. There's
a link to McAfee that tells you how to restore the items (if you don't
have it set to auto-delete infected files).

Hi,

How far back did you try to take the system with System Restore?

Try an earlier restore point.
