Unable to boot up - Execution Prevention

Scorrybreck

Last night I was browsing the web when I suddenly had lots of Microsoft virus
warnings popping up. I immediately disconnected and then ran a McAfee full
system scan, but it didn’t find anything, so I shut the laptop down. Now when
I try to boot it up, just when the desktop background appears (but no icons)
I get the following message – “Data Execution Prevention - to help protect
your computer, Windows has closed this program – Cookie Converter by
Microsoftâ€. The start up process then halts and goes no further. I then click
on “close message†(which is the only option), then get a “Cookie Converter
has encountered a problem and needs to close…. Please tell Microsoft about
this problemâ€â€¦. window. The laptop remains frozen, no matter whether I click
on “Send Error Report†or “Don’t Sendâ€. My only option then is to power it
off, which it appears to do quite normally i.e. “Logging Off†followed by
“Windows is shutting downâ€.

I have tried booting up in safe mode, and also ‘safe mode/last known good
configuration’, but exactly the same thing happens each time i.e. I cannot
get past the above error message.

Can anyone suggest what else I can try?

I’m running Windows XP SP3 and am up-to-date with all Windows updates.

I'm posting to this thread in hopes that there's a common solution. I
believe as a result of a WordPerfect freeze, my desktop boot-up process was
disrupted. I've had two MS Chat sessions. Both failed to fix the problem,
except that, whereas then my computer would eventually launch after going
through the beginning loop 4 or 5 times, now it no longer eventually boots
up. It just continues going through the process over and over, Windows
logo, Gateway logo, black & white page, etc.

During Chat 1, the file intelppm.xxx was renamed to intelppm.old. During
Chat 2, the registry was edited, certain things were disabled. Neither
remedy worked.

Had a similar problem recently on a clients machine. Same message different
program referenced by the system. But in most cases this is caused by a
trojan. Try the following.

Sounds like spyware infection to me

Boot up the computer

When you see the error messages do not click to close them in any way. Leave
them on the desktop.

Open Regedit from the run command

Click Start, click Run, type regedit

Registry will open

Click on Edit from top toolbar then click on Find

Type in scvhostw.exe click on Find Next

*** make sure you type svchostw because Windows has a legitimate file called
svchost with no 'w' [ svchostw ] at the end

If a file by that name is found right click the entry and delete it.

Go back to the edit menu and click on Find Next see if the system finds
another reference to the file, delete the next reference etc etc until you
have no files by that name coming up in a search.

Reboot the machine

If no file by that name was found and you are still having problems I would
boot in Safe Mode using the F8 key and select Safe Mode with network support
so you have an internet connection and I would run an up to date virus and
spyware scan. My two choices for spyware scanners would be Malwarebytes and
Super AntiSpyware.

Malwarebytes: Free Version
Website: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
Download page:

Super Antispyware: Free Version
Website: http://www.superantispyware.com/
Download page:
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

Usual disclaimer is that working in the registry you have to be careful what
you delete as it can render the machine inoperative.

Export each key to the desktop before deleting and after you have finished
delete them.
