lost XP sound

I've an ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe, XP Pro, all the service packs and
patches. The board has Realtek ALC850 sound. The sound has been a no
brainer
for years.

A couple of weeks back my sound went out. About that time the Plextor
software I use for ripping audio started acting up. I uninstalled and
reinstalled it several times, but it has just stopped working. No big
deal, except for the boken audio. This may or may not be related.

I reinstalled the latest NVIDIA drivers which include the sound
drivers. Nada. I disabled audio in the BIOS, installed a 24 bit
soundblaster audigy card, got the latest drivers and installed them.
The sound drivers installed ok, but I've got a big PCI yellow icon
with a question mark, probably the game controller or midi which I
could care less about. Still no audio.

Remove the soundblaster, re-enable the internal audio, remove it in
xp, reinstall it. Nothing.

HELP!!!!!

if your onboard audio was toast your audigy should have produced sound. You
may need to do a repair install of windows.
dumb question you sure your speakers are working?

Thanks for your reply. I've put a headset on the output with no
effect. Speakers crackle like the dickens when I plug in and out. You
are correct, though, that it wouldn't hurt to plug in another set.

I just did the repair installation in January to fix a bunch of
issues. Sound went out about 3-4 wks later. Ho hum.

Well, its the onboard sound hardware.

I put the soundblaster back in and it's working fine. I never would
have expected my onboard sound would die. Maybe I need to get a
cheapie socket 939 while they they are still around.

I should have chucked the whole bidness and just bought a socket AM2
and some ram. Would have been cheaper!!!
