No sound with a working card

I have an onboard realtek AC'97 card, which is apparently working according
to device manager, and not even present according to the 'Sound Audio and
Devices' Properties.

Device manager reports the card as working, no conflicts, latest driver,
using the audio features of this card.
The BIOS shows the card as enabled,
The Windows audio service is started automatically, and is running.

But ...

The 'Sound Audio and Devices' Properties (control Panel), Audio Tab has no
sound playback, the default device is greyed out, as is the sound recording
and the midi playback.

does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks.

Uninstall it from the Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel. Download the
new drivers from the PC manufacturer's website. Reboot PC. Install the
software you just downloaded.
