Sound suddenly lost in WinXP SP2

My problem in Winxp SP2 is with my Soundblaster card. Sounds were all
working until recently now suddenly no sounds and volume control on
the taskbar .
If I check in the System/Hardware/Device Manager the sound devices
appear listed and ok.
However in the Sound and Audio devices applet in Settings/Control
Panel/Sound and Audio Devices it shows that there are no devices or
hardware present.
I thought it was the sound card so I replaced it with a new one,
Windows recognised new hardware and installed the drivers from the CD
but still the same problem. I have tried disabling and re-enabling the
onboard sound card ( which I don't want to use ) to see if that makes
any difference but no.
If I run the DXDIAG utility it shows hardware correctly Soundblaster
Audigy but if I try to test directsound it says no driver. If I go to
the next page in this test and highlight Soundblaster Audigy and test
direct sound, I hear music so the card/speakers clearly work.
How can I get my sound to work ?

first, see if your card works.
Try to install your card on another computer, hope this helps, Carlos.
PD: I wonder if the card can be tested on DOS environment.

This is a brand new card replaced after the same problem with the old
card.
Can't be the problem.

it seems that you have a corrupt windows file, options are

1) it would be worth to
install another Windows OS on another partition
of your computer, then try to install your card there,
It must work, if not, you have a mob problem

2) Go back to another restore point, perhaps
this shall renew your critical files

hope this helps, Carlos.
