Lost "Web Document " Tab in Properties

R

Richard

When I right click and choose properties for any
Favorites shortcut, there is no longer a "Web Document"
tab (formerly "Shortcut" tab in Win9x). This occurs any
way in which I access the Favorites folder; from the
start menu, dropdowns in IE6 or Outlook or in Windows
Explorer. This absence prevents me from easily viewing
the url for the shortcut and from changing the icon or
other customization. I also used to have an icon for just
about every Favorite shortcut, usually taken from the web
page, and they have all reverted back to the default blue
E over a document icon. This may have happened when I
installed the Avant browser, since I first noticed this
sometime after the installation, but I have uninstalled
it and there is no change. There is also, in Outlook, no
right click menu at all on Favorites, though I can't say
that I ever saw one ther to begin with.
XP Home SP-1, IE6 SP1, Office & Outlook 2002(XP)SP-2 with
all critical updates from Winows and Office Uodate.
Any insight or a direction of where to find out more will
be greatly appreciated.

Richard,

Is the Web tab also missing via Desktop Properites/Desktop/
Customize Desktop? If so, run the edit on line

Restore the Web Tab - Display Properties (Line 177)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

As per 2:

These are generally known as favicons.ico (Favorite Icons) and they normally
will only last until your Internet Explorer Temp files are cleared.

This program will allow you to save the favicons.ico (Favorite Icons)
permanently in a different folder and re-associate your favorites with the
stored icons.

Thanks, Kelly, for the attempts. I am familiar with
Kelly's Korner site, have it bookmarked, and have
downloaded some.reg files in the past. Good site.
The web tab was not missing in
DesktopProperties/Desktop/Customize Desktop. I ran the
edit anyway but it had no effect on the problem or the
other tab. I think that is a different deal. The missing
tab is called the shortcut tab on regular shortcuts, like
for an application, but in XP it was changed to Web
Document for URL shortcuts. The target can be modified on
this tab and the icon can be changed. Still no where to
be found and it used to be there because I had assigned
many BMp's as icons forthese shortcuts earlier, both in
Win98 and XP. That leads into part 2.
I was not refering to FavIcons but rather to bitmap
images I had saved as bitmaps from websites and stored in
a folder, then assigned to shortcuts using the Shortcut
or Web Document tab. They never went away when I cleaned
out Temporary Internet files in the past (I do that quite
regularly). I tried FavOrg program and got some
interesting results. I set it to Find FavIcons and Do Not
Overwrite Icons. Ran a Go, and all my previously assigned
icons appeared in the tree as they were previously
assigned, and some new icons were downloaded into my new
folder for FavIcons, but were not assigned to the
shortcuts in FavOrg and I am not able to do so. And none
of the icons are actually appearing in any Favorites List
display or in the Favorites folder, as I first presented
in my first post. So, it appears that the previously
assigned icons are still somehow aligned with the
shortcuts but what ever is disabling the Web Documents
tab is affecting the display of the icons as well. Figure
out what is blocking this and we may solve everything as
well as getting the FavIcons to display with their
shortcuts. I hope this makes sense to you Kelly or
hopefully someone else out there is following this too
and somehow we'll hit upon what's happening Thanks and
I'm sorry for the length.

I see, Richard. I have no idea "what" is blocking it. I only know that the
Web Document Tab (as is Synchronize) is related to "Making Pages Available
Online." Good luck!

Thanks again Kelly: But I don't think we are talking
about the same thing. The tab I am talking about should
have nothing to do with Sychronize or Making pages
available offline. I'll try to make it clearer. Start/All
Programs/any shortcut, say MS Word. Right click, choose
Properties. A multi tabbed dialog opens with 2 sometimes
3, tabs;General, shortcut, compatability. Now open the
favorites menu, either from the start menu, where I have
one, or from IE or in Windows Explorer folder. Pick any
favorite shortcut, right click and choose properties.
This time the dialog has 2 tabs;general and Web Document
(instead of shortcut)This tab has the target info for the
shortcut (for favorites it's the URL) and a button to
change the icon. This tab is what is no longer there It
is strictly a properties dialog for the shortcut. I have
posted this on several forums and searched the KB, and no
one seems to have a clue how these dialogs are generated
or been able to give me any insight as to how this works,
so don't feel like you're letting me down. This only
happens with favorites shortcuts and no others. I'm at a
loss. I apparently did this fixing something else and
would love to find a source for how some things like this
and the Address bar and the Send To menu all actually
work, not just how they are supposed to work and be used.
Sorry for the rant. Thanks again for trying at all.

We are talking about the same thing, Richard. This is an issue between IE
versions. Try one of the MS IE groups. Good luck!

Kelly: Just a short note to thank you for your attempts
to help and to let know the resolution. System restore
would not work for me from several restore points; didn't
say why just that it couldn't restore. So, I finally re-
installed Win XP, fortunately Dell had included a
reinstallation CD, and after a pretty simple Activation
procedure, everything came back and , to my surprise,
most of my settings and customizations all came back as
well. Best of all, the Web Documents tab reappeared as
well as all of the icons I had assigned to many of the
shortcuts. My Send To menu had also gone south and it
came back in full as well. I know you think it was an IE
problem but I'm guessing a registry or .dll problem. The
only part of this I'm disappointed about is that I didn't
actually learn what caused it and how to fix it without
reinstalling, nor did you. Thanks again for your time and
effort to try and assist me. Greatly appreciated. See you
next time.

Very interesting and thanks for the feedback. And no, I wasn't totally
dependant and/or leaning toward IE, it was the direction of choice at the
time. Keep us all posted and good luck with it all.
