The “Windows Genuine Advantage Notification” (KB905474) cannot be
uninstalled by Add/Remove Program in Control Panel by default, contrary to
the claim in the knowledge base article. To enable the removal of KB905474
WGA Notification tool, follow the below steps:

Note: It seems like it’s not possible to uninstall WGA Notifications from
Add/Remove Program. Cobolhacker has details on why KB905474 cannot be
uninstalled. Suggested steps to “uninstall” are search and delete all
WgaTray.exe and WgaLogon.dll files in your boot drive (if you using search,
check the “Search system folders”, “Search hidden files and folders” and
“Search subfolders” checkboxes), delete all the register keys in the
following tree: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows NT
\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\WgaLogon, and to remove the entry from
Add/Remove Programs list, delete the registry key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Uninstall\WgaNotify. With
uninstallation, WGA Notifications will try to install again next time.

That's better - can read that - but have read it already - it was posted a
couple of days ago in this or another group.
But with my tech ability I cant say I found one method with which I would be
comfortable :-( :-(
I will have to wait until I can use Add/Remove - though I may not have
enough years left!

Hi Carey,

While I agree 100% that users should post to the WGA forum to try to resolve
the issue, just what makes you think the hack is bogus? Have you tested it
on a machine which has failed WGA?
You may be unpleasantly surprised by the results.

Hi, Antioch,

Yes, the link was previously posted in this NG a few days ago. Methods
7 and 9 are straightforward, and the Autoruns utility from
www.sysinternals.com mentioned in Method 9 is worth having on your system.

I can't attest to any of the recommended "fixes" as I've not tried any
of them.

The link in your original post has wrapped - it is a broken link.

Like I said earlier, the purported fix or hack is 100% bogus.
Windows XP users who have an issue with WGA should
post their inquiry in the appropriate Newsgroup for a
honest troubleshooting resolution.

Your post is 100% useless and solves absolutely nothing!

So answer my question dammit.

I'll refresh your memory.....

'Which of the 12 !!! different methods do/don't work ?'

Which ones have YOU tried, examined, or otherwise analyzed ?

I never said they all worked, but offered the information for everyone to
see. I'm pretty sure that out of 12, at least 2 or 3 should do the trick.

FYI, I only posted this AFTER reading through the M$ forum YOU posted a
link to earlier in the day, and after reading for an hour about problems
people have been having with WGA.

Sure there were people there that knew they had illegal copies on their
computer, but there were also tons of people that got screwed by
unscrupulous PC dealers and computer shops. People completely un-aware of
it and the only help that M$ wants to give is help cleaning out your
wallet.

Microsoft never receives any money for pirated, illegal versions
of Windows XP in the first place. Microsoft does have a program
that enables unsuspecting users a way to obtain and install a genuine
version of Windows XP at a greatly reduced price.

And in the future, if a Windows XP user wishes to upgrade to
the upcoming Windows Vista operating system, that will have
to have a "genuine version" of Windows XP in order to upgrade.

No surprise, that is for sure.
